We get asked every week in Baking Steel pizza class, what else can you make with pizza dough? You wouldn't believe how versatile our 72 hour pizza dough recipe can be. Ok, not just ours but any homemade pizza dough recipe - even store bought if you want to go that way.
There is no particular order here, but here are my top 5 things to make with pizza dough, other than pizza of course.
1. Bread Sticks.
Bread sticks are one of my favorite things to make, especially with the kids. Literally, take a pizza room temperature pizza dough and stretch it into a rectangle. Let it rest for 5 minutes, grab a dough scraper and cut out your sticks. Bake on parchment paper on your Baking Steel for about 5 minutes, open oven flip your sticks and repeat. Thank me later.
2. Dinner Rolls
We portion our pizza doughs at 240-50 grams each. Take on out of the fridge and divide it into thirds. Ball it up and let it rest for an hour. Bake in your oven for 20 minutes at 400 F. Let your steel preheat with the oven, it's that easy.
I can't take the credit for this one. Jenn Louis, Food and Wine 2012 can take the cake. Her genius Stromboli recipe is still our favorite thing to serve when we have guests in the test kitchen. Here is the recipe, it's killer..
We did this a few weeks ago. Just combine a bunch of old or new pizza doughs, place on a well oiled sheet tray and let her rest for a few hours. Top the dough with your favorite vegetables from your garden.
5. Fried Dough
Save the best for last right? Grab a pot of your favorite canola oil, vegetable oil or lard...Stretch out your pizza dough and cut into golf ball size pieces. Fry for a minute, toss in an aggressive amount of powdered sugar and burn your mouth.
